$7.6 Trillion AI Infrastructure Investment Pressures Hyper-scalers' Cash Flow

The competition for AI investments among Google, Amazon, Microsoft, and Meta is shifting focus towards cash flow and debt burdens. Meritz Securities has analyzed that competition among hyper-scalers will intensify from the second half of the year. While AI capital investments were considered a buildup for future profits, cash flow pressures have become prominent following the second quarter results. Microsoft and Amazon reported decent earnings, but the rising costs of AI infrastructure are raising concerns about revenue growth and funding burdens. Goldman Sachs predicts that the scale of AI infrastructure investment will reach $7.6 trillion from 2026 to 2031, with the compute sector accounting for $5.1 trillion and data centers and power infrastructure at $2.5 trillion. This year's annual investment is estimated to be $800 billion, with projections of reaching $1 trillion next year. Meritz Securities forecasts that the free cash flow of hyper-scalers will turn negative starting in the fourth quarter of this year, warning that losses could exceed $100 billion. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) has pointed out the funding structure of AI infrastructure investments as a risk factor, indicating that the actual debt of U.S. hyper-scalers could reach $1.6 trillion. Interest rates and inflation may also pose burdens for AI investment companies.
