a16z Launches $1.1 Billion Machine Age Fund to Invest in AI Hardware and Infrastructure
a16z has announced that its new fund, the Machine Age Fund, has completed a $1.1 billion financing round, focusing on investing in the hardware and infrastructure that support AI operations. This includes a complete system of chips, memory, networking, storage, data centers, robotics, and consumer AI devices. With the current surge in AI demand and computational density, existing supply chains and physical and computational architectures are nearing their limits. Rack power is increasing from 5-10 kW to 100-250 kW, and it is expected to reach 1 MW within three years, while data center scales are expanding to hundreds of MW and even GW-level parks. The fund will target higher computational density, cheaper high-bandwidth memory, faster interconnects, and low-power edge devices, along with supporting cooling, power, and real estate infrastructure to back the next generation of AI hardware startups.
