AMD Launches First AI Rack-Scale System Helios, Microsoft Joins Procurement Ranks
On July 20, AMD launched its first AI rack-scale system, Helios, which Microsoft will deploy in its Azure data centers, becoming a key customer following Meta, OpenAI, and Oracle. Helios is seen as a critical product for AMD to challenge NVIDIA's dominance in AI infrastructure, directly competing with NVIDIA's Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin systems, with deliveries expected later this year. Microsoft will leverage AMD Helios to support cutting-edge model inference, AI application development, and Azure AI services, and will introduce two types of compute instances based on AMD's latest Venice CPU for applications in agent AI and semiconductor design. AMD stated that Helios integrates self-developed GPUs, CPUs, networking chips, and software ecosystems to provide a lower cost per token. The system utilizes the MI400 series GPUs, with each compute tray featuring four Instinct GPUs and one EPYC CPU. Currently, Meta plans to deploy Helios systems with a capacity of up to 1GW, and companies like OpenAI and Oracle have also announced the adoption of related solutions, with eight of the world's top ten AI companies already running workloads on its Instinct GPUs.
