Apple Considering Adoption of ChangXin Memory DRAM
Apple is reviewing the option of equipping its products sold in China with ChangXin Memory Technologies' DRAM. This move is interpreted as part of an effort to expand its supply chain in response to rising memory prices. According to Global Times, Apple and ChangXin Memory have initiated preliminary discussions for component supply, with the target being certain products sold in China. Ma Jihua, a researcher at the China Technology Industry Research Institute, mentioned that Apple needs to expand its supply chain to curb costs amid a memory supply shortage, indicating a high likelihood of adopting ChangXin Memory chips. It has been reported that Apple has been testing ChangXin Memory products in its iPhones and MacBooks, but the details regarding actual supply contracts remain undisclosed. DRAM is a volatile memory semiconductor widely used in smartphones, PCs, and AI data centers. The increasing construction of AI data centers has heightened the burden of memory procurement costs and securing volumes. In June, Apple raised the prices of iPads and MacBooks due to the rise in memory and storage chip prices, emphasizing the need for diversification of suppliers. ChangXin Memory is a Chinese DRAM manufacturer, and if Apple adopts it, it would add a local procurement option in addition to its existing suppliers. This is related to the supply positions of South Korea's Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, but it is too early to determine the impact on the performance of these two companies as the application regions and volumes have not been specified.
