Bitcoin is once again being 'buried' on social media: what this could mean for its price
Bitcoin has once again found itself at the center of a wave of pessimism: the analytical platform Santiment has recorded a sharp increase in negative messages about the first cryptocurrency on X, Reddit, and Telegram. Discussions increasingly feature phrases like "dead," "dying," "over," and "all is finished" --- dead, dying, over, ended, ending, finished. Experts estimate that such rhetoric reflects the fatigue of retail investors: against the backdrop of a weak market, they begin to perceive temporary dips as definitive failures.
Why negativity around Bitcoin could be a market signal
Santiment reminds us that similar spikes of fear in the past have often occurred before market reversals. The crypto market frequently goes against the crowd's sentiment, especially when participants become overly confident that growth is impossible.
When discussions about the "Death of cryptocurrencies" intensify, while Bitcoin maintains important price zones, assets continue to transition to more patient market participants. Such investors are often referred to as "strong hands." Sellers, on the other hand, gradually exit, and the pressure on the price may weaken.
This is why Santiment considers the current picture potentially interesting for buyers who are willing to wait.
What happened during previous spikes of fear
The last notable wave of similar sentiments occurred in June. At that time, Bitcoin's price twice fell below $60,000 per coin and updated its minimum since the end of 2024. After that, the price recovered by about 10% from the local bottom within one to two weeks.
Currently, fear looks different. As of August 14, it is linked not so much to a sharp decline as to a lack of strong volatility and weak trading volumes. Some crypto investors have shifted their attention to stocks of traditional companies, commodities, and other instruments of the classic financial market.
Against this backdrop, experts describe the current bear market as one of the most challenging for the crypto industry. Hundreds of crypto projects, including exchanges, have ceased operations, and 80% of the revenues of all protocols are concentrated in just three projects.
The price remains in a narrow range
Key figures regarding the price are as follows:
- Date: August 14.
- Bitcoin price: below $63,000.
- Range since June: $60,000--$66,000.
- Range since July: $62,000--$65,000.
- Change since the beginning of the year: a decrease of nearly 30%.
- Change from the record of $126,200, reached in early October last year: a drop of about 50%.
Weak trading volumes, outflows from Bitcoin ETFs, and a general deterioration in sentiment are putting pressure on the price. Due to such factors, the price can react sharply even to news and expectations, which is why Bitcoin remains a volatile asset.
Weak dynamics are also confirmed by trading volumes. In terms of the amount of Bitcoin, the indicator has dropped to its lowest level since 2019. Additional pressure has been created by outflows from Bitcoin-based exchange-traded funds: in June alone, the largest Bitcoin ETFs lost over $4.5 billion in investor funds, and the total outflow since the beginning of the year has exceeded $4.7 billion, despite significant inflows in certain months.
The fear index is back in the red zone
The rise in negative messages coincided with the market's prolonged stay in the fear zone. The Fear & Greed Index from the Alternative platform was at 29 points on August 14. This corresponds to a state of "Fear."
The last time the index briefly exited this zone was in May and January of this year, but then sentiments worsened again. Prior to that, the index was in the "Greed" zone on October 10, 2025 --- the day of the largest cryptocurrency market crash, which led to liquidations of trading positions totaling at least $19 billion.
Why Bitcoin is under so much scrutiny
Bitcoin remains the main benchmark for the entire digital asset market. To avoid confusion in terms, it is useful to break down the foundation of the Bitcoin protocol into simple elements:
- Bitcoin --- the international name for Bitcoin.
- Cryptocurrency and Digital currency --- a general class of digital assets.
- Peer-to-peer network --- participants interact directly, without a single center of control.
- Open-source software --- the system's code is available for verification and development.
- Cryptography --- protects transactions and helps confirm rights to coins.
- Blockchain --- a chain of records about transactions that underpins the network's operation.
For investors, Bitcoin is not just a cryptocurrency but also an asset by which the sentiment of the entire sector is assessed. Its price is usually compared to the United States dollar, and its dynamics often influence interest in other coins and projects, including Ethereum, Bitcoin Cash, and services like Coinbase.
In simpler terms, the essence of Bitcoin is to provide users with a way to transfer value over the network without a single intermediary. In broad discussions alongside it, terms like Coin, Cash, Decentralization, and E-commerce payment system often appear. All of these help describe different aspects of the market, but the current wave of fear once again shows: Bitcoin remains the main indicator of trust in cryptocurrencies.
