Germany Opens Drone Security Center to Address Airport Threats
Germany has opened a drone security technology center to respond to drone threats targeting airports and critical infrastructure. The facility was established on the 18th at the Kochstedt test airport of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and will serve as a research hub to detect unauthorized drone activities and protect airports, energy facilities, and public institutions. German Federal Minister of the Interior Alexander Dobrindt emphasized the need for an independent research organization to respond to the arms race in drone technology. The center plans to conduct various research activities, including performance verification of detection equipment, drone tracking, disruption, and interception experiments. This initiative follows an incident where a drone equipped with an explosive device was discovered at Leipzig/Halle Airport. The German government plans to expand its drone defense personnel from 130 to 300 and increase operational bases from four to eight, including major airports such as Frankfurt, Munich, and Berlin. This highlights the growing risk of drones extending beyond military equipment to the operations of airports, logistics, energy, and security infrastructure.
