Instagram Faces Trial Over Teen Safety Issues
Instagram head Adam Mosseri testified in federal court in Oakland, defending the platform's safety record. He is a key witness in a lawsuit filed by 29 states against Meta in 2023, accusing the company of designing features that are addictive to children. Mosseri questioned the prosecution's emphasis on the Take a Break feature, which is intended to interrupt prolonged use by teenagers. Internal documents show that only 1.8% of teens have enabled the feature. Mosseri stated that while reminders are helpful for users, their effectiveness has been below expectations. By the end of 2024, the feature will be optional and must be manually activated, although Meta later made it the default for teen accounts. The prosecution also mentioned presentation materials prepared by Mosseri's team, indicating that Meta lawyers had instructed product designers to limit the data communicated to Mosseri and referenced his level of exposure in the lawsuit. On the same day, Instagram's design director Francesco Fogu admitted that data was deleted from a slide in 2023, showing that teenagers are 1.5 times more likely than adults to encounter content related to bullying, suicide, hate, nudity, and violence. The trial began last week and is expected to last about six weeks, with the jury set to make an advisory ruling. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers will determine liability and potential penalties or changes, with states possibly seeking close to $200 billion in damages.
