Mistral and HUMAIN to Build Sovereign AI Infrastructure in Saudi Arabia
Mistral and HUMAIN announced plans to develop sovereign AI infrastructure in Saudi Arabia, representing a collaboration worth hundreds of millions of euros. Mistral, based in Paris, will partner with HUMAIN, owned by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, to create and localize advanced AI models and solutions for the Kingdom and the region. The initiative aims to address the demand for sovereign AI, ensuring data is not controlled by third parties and that models can be owned with open weights. Mistral is enhancing its compute capabilities through Mistral Compute, allowing it to utilize Saudi-based resources instead of relying solely on European or American infrastructure. The companies will also pursue a joint market strategy in regulated industries within Saudi Arabia. Mistral recently launched a unified open-source model and has been developing its frontier family of models to compete with DeepSeek and others. HUMAIN has already made significant strides, including a partnership with NVIDIA to deploy 600,000 AI systems over three years and a joint venture with AMD and Cisco targeting 1 GW of AI infrastructure by 2030. The Gulf region has been actively investing in European AI initiatives.
