NASA and SpaceX Delay Crew-13 Due to Leak in Dragon Spacecraft

A Leak Changes the Crew-13 Schedule
The upcoming crewed mission of SpaceX to the International Space Station, known as Crew-13, will not launch on September 12 as planned. NASA announced on Saturday, August 29, that the delay is due to a leak of oxidizer detected in the propulsion system of the Dragon spacecraft, an essential component for the vehicle's maneuvers during its journey and its operation in orbit.
According to an update published by the space agency, joint teams from NASA and SpaceX are conducting additional tests and reviewing the collected data to understand the extent of the problem. They will also complete any necessary corrective work before authorizing the launch, although there is currently no new target date publicly communicated.
The mission will launch aboard a Falcon 9 rocket from the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida. The postponement does not cancel the flight but does require modifications to an operational sequence that includes the final preparation of the rocket, the spacecraft, the crew, and the systems that enable docking with the orbital station.
Crew-13 will be the thirteenth operational astronaut mission that SpaceX conducts for NASA to the ISS. The company also carried out Demo-2, a crewed test flight that reached the orbital laboratory in May 2020, before consolidating its regular crew transport missions.
Four Astronauts and Seven Months in Orbit
The crew consists of Jessica Watkins, commander, and Luke Delaney, pilot, both from NASA. They will also be joined by Joshua Kutryk, mission specialist from the Canadian Space Agency, and Sergey Teteryatnikov, mission specialist from Roscosmos, the Russian federal space corporation.
The group is expected to stay for seven months at the International Space Station, where they will undertake maintenance tasks and scientific activities. The international composition of the crew reflects the cooperative nature of the station, which brings together operations and experiments linked to various space agencies.
Watkins explained during a press conference held on August 3 that the mission would have a particularly busy agenda of maintenance tasks, both inside and outside the station. Among the planned activities are several EVAs, a term used to refer to extravehicular activities or spacewalks.
The plan also includes operations for capturing and storing visiting vehicles, as well as scientific experiments that will travel with the crew. Watkins added that the astronauts will dedicate time to outreach activities, a regular part of crewed missions that aims to bring orbital work closer to the public.
Tests Before a New Date
The oxidizer leak introduces a technical review before NASA and SpaceX can confirm the next launch attempt. The oxidizer is part of the propulsion system, so teams must verify the behavior of the affected component, analyze the data, and determine what rework will allow the recovery of the conditions required for flight.
The agency did not report in the update how long the investigation will take nor did it detail the exact location of the leak within the Dragon spacecraft. Consequently, any estimates regarding the new schedule would be premature, as the date will depend on the results of the tests and the completion of the necessary corrections.
The delay also requires re-coordinating the launch activities with the availability of the Falcon 9 and the facilities at Cape Canaveral. Additionally, the mission must fit with the operations of the station, where visiting vehicles, crew tasks, and experiments require precise planning to avoid interference.
The available information does not indicate any damage to the four astronauts nor does it suggest that the mission has changed crew. For now, the announced procedure consists of testing, reviewing data, and completing the technical work before NASA publishes an updated date for Crew-13.
SpaceX Maintains Other Flights in Preparation
The delay of Crew-13 occurs while SpaceX maintains a broad schedule of launches and tests. The company had just sent NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope into space on Sunday, August 30, using a Falcon Heavy rocket, in a high-profile mission for the U.S. agency.
SpaceX's activity also includes preparing for a new test flight of Starship, the next-generation megacraft that the company presents as a platform capable of transforming space travel. The next attempt would be the fourteenth for Starship up to that point and aims to reach Earth orbit for the first time, provided conditions allow for the plan to be fulfilled.
The company is targeting mid-September for the so-called Starship Flight 14, according to available information. That window places two highly relevant programs on a near calendar, although the investigation of the Crew-13 Dragon will take priority before NASA and SpaceX allow the crewed launch.
The coexistence of these projects shows the breadth of SpaceX's operations, but also the need to separate experimental objectives from missions with astronauts. While Starship seeks to validate new capabilities, Crew-13 depends on rigorous certification of the Dragon and coordination among NASA, SpaceX, Canada, and Roscosmos.
The next update should clarify whether the tests confirm a quick solution or if the technical work will extend the postponement beyond the original date. Until then, the teams' priority will be to resolve the oxidizer leak and demonstrate that the Dragon spacecraft is ready to safely transport its four occupants to the ISS.
