Owning One Bitcoin Is 70 Times Rarer Than Being a Millionaire
Approximately 825000 people globally own at least one whole bitcoin (BTC), significantly fewer than the estimated 57500000 millionaires. This comparison reveals that millionaire status is more common than owning a single bitcoin. River, a Bitcoin financial services firm, derived this estimate from Bitcoin's public blockchain, adjusting for the difference between addresses and actual owners. While around 972000 addresses hold at least one Bitcoin, this figure includes corporate treasuries and exchanges, which were excluded to arrive at the 825000 estimate, with a plausible range of 600000 to 1000000. The ratio of millionaires to whole-coin owners is about 70 to 1, equating to a 1-in-10000 chance of owning a whole bitcoin compared to a 1-in-143 chance of becoming a millionaire. Bitcoin's supply cap is set at 21 million coins, with approximately 20100000 already mined, limiting the number of whole-coin holders. River's earlier study indicated that individuals control about two-thirds of the circulating supply, despite increasing institutional ownership through exchange-traded funds. The rise in Bitcoin millionaires has outpaced stock market wealth creation, influenced by fixed-supply mechanics. Institutional demand, particularly from spot Bitcoin ETF adoption, has further increased the number of BTC millionaires. Bitcoin (BTC) was trading near 79134, down 1.96% in 24 hours, with a total market value of approximately 1.59 trillion for the 20100000 mined coins. As institutions accumulate Bitcoin, the number of whole-coin holders is expected to decline, while the millionaire population continues to grow.
