Programmer Holds 7,002 Bitcoin Private Keys on USB Drive with Only 2 Password Attempts Left, Valued at Approximately $777 Million
Programmer Stefan Thomas possesses an IronKey encrypted USB drive containing 7,002 Bitcoin private keys, which were earned as payment for an educational video he created in 2011. At an estimated value of around $111,000 per Bitcoin, this amounts to approximately $777 million. The device is set to permanently lock and delete its contents after 10 incorrect password attempts, and Thomas has already tried 8 times, leaving only 2 chances to enter the password. The manufacturer, Kingston, stated that there are no backup passwords or alternative recovery methods aside from the original password set by the user. Thomas has sought assistance from the digital forensics company Naxo and security researcher Chris Tarnovsky, and he declined help from Unciphered due to having reached a verbal agreement with the two teams. As of the end of 2025, the IronKey remains stored in a Swiss vault, with no confirmation of recovery success by mid-2026.
