Economic expectations among Argentinians have deteriorated again, reaching one of their lowest levels in recent years in August. A recent survey showed that 60% of respondents believe their personal situation will worsen in the coming months, seven percentage points higher than in July. This level of pessimism is the highest since the end of Alberto Fernández's government.
The survey, conducted by Opina Argentina on 1,507 cases between August 7 and 11 across the country, indicates that economic discomfort has ceased to be a temporary perception and has become a more persistent trait of public opinion. According to the report, the stabilization of some macroeconomic variables has yet to translate into a concrete improvement in the daily situation of households.
The deterioration of expectations also affects sectors that had supported Javier Milei's government. According to the study, six out of ten voters for Milei and Patricia Bullrich in the 2023 elections believe their personal situation will worsen in the coming months. This data represents a sign of weariness of social tolerance towards the official economic program.
In parallel with the deterioration of expectations, unemployment appears as the main problem that Argentinians expect the government to resolve. 36% of respondents placed it in first place, above corruption at 32%, inflation at 11%, and insecurity at 9%.
The fear of losing jobs has also spread among families. 64% of respondents expressed concern about the possibility of a household member losing their job in the coming months.
This data is significant because the economic discussion is increasingly shifting from inflation to employment, income, and purchasing power.
The negative perception of the future coexists with a tight financial situation in households. 48% of respondents stated that they cannot make ends meet, while only 18% reported being able to save in the last month. Another 32% managed to cover their basic expenses, but without generating any margin to save money.
The lack of saving capacity is also reflected in consumption decisions. 62% believe it is not a good time to buy appliances, while 75% stated they did not spend on leisure activities, such as movies, theater, or dining out, in the last month.
Thus, the perception of the economy is not limited to future expectations: it also impacts concrete family decisions and their ability to consume or generate financial backup.
The survey also showed a deterioration in expectations regarding inflation. 55% of Argentinians believe that the price dynamics will accelerate in the coming months, while only 22% expect a reduction in inflation.
Moreover, the majority of respondents believe that the government has not yet managed to resolve the inflation problem. 63% responded that Milei's administration is not solving inflation, compared to 34% who believe there is an improvement.
The dollar is also not exempt from the uncertainty scenario. 57% of respondents expect the value of the US dollar to increase in the coming months, while 32% believe it will remain stable.
The report thus exposes one of the main political and economic difficulties facing the government: the gap between the stabilization of some macroeconomic variables and households' perception of their own situation.
While the Executive maintains that fiscal order and inflation reduction are the pillars for consolidating recovery, a growing part of the population still does not perceive that improvement in their income, saving capacity, or consumption possibilities. The result is an increasingly negative expectations scenario: 6 out of 10 Argentinians anticipate a deterioration of their economic situation, almost half cannot make ends meet, and employment has become the main concern.
