Sony and Warner Sue Anthropic for Alleged Music Copyright Infringement
Sony Music and Warner Music's publishing arm have filed a lawsuit against Anthropic in the Northern District of California, accusing its CEO Dario Amodei and co-founder Benjamin Mann of massive copyright infringement during the development of the Claude series of AI models. The plaintiffs claim in a 48-page complaint that Anthropic obtained copyrighted works through illegal seed downloads, scraping, and downloading, using "tens of thousands" of music works to train its models, far exceeding the scope of BMG's lawsuit concerning 493 works. The plaintiffs also allege that Anthropic pirated thousands of copyrighted music works, seeking damages of hundreds of thousands of dollars for each infringing work. Anthropic responded by stating that it disagrees with the allegations and will vigorously defend itself in court. Previously, Anthropic reached a $1.5 billion copyright settlement with writers and publishers in September 2025.
