Strongest Bullish Signal in Four Years Emerges in U.S. Options Market as FOMO Grows
The U.S. options market has recently shown extreme bullish signals, with investor FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) intensifying, becoming a significant force driving the market higher. The S&P 500 index rose a cumulative 5.8% over four consecutive trading days before August 4, following nearly three months of narrow fluctuations with a range of only 5.7%. With the easing of tensions in the Middle East, falling oil prices, and strong corporate earnings, capital is flowing back into U.S. stocks. The average daily trading ratio of bullish to bearish options for the S&P 500 has risen to 0.9, reaching its highest level in at least four years. An indicator measuring the skew of short-term S&P 500 bullish options has recently surged to a two-year high, indicating that investors are paying higher premiums to bet on a rapid market rise. Mark Hackett, Chief Market Strategist at Nationwide, stated that the buy-the-dip strategy is paying off again, and FOMO is at play, with investors unwilling to miss out on the upward trend. Steve Sosnick, Chief Strategist at Interactive Brokers, noted that FOMO has not disappeared, as many institutional investors are more concerned about missing out on upward opportunities and are hedging risks by purchasing bullish options. However, some analysts warn that extreme options demand could amplify market volatility, and the surge in bullish options demand may drive the VIX and the stock market to rise in tandem. U.S. stock bulls are still supported by strong economic data, corporate earnings, and a surge in AI investments, but the extreme optimism in a high market also raises concerns among some investors about potential pullback risks.
