Why It’s Beneficial to Invest in a Fixed Term in Dollars?
The fixed term in dollars is an available alternative for those who already have savings in this currency and seek to earn profits on them without converting to pesos. The operation consists of depositing dollars for a specified period and receiving, upon maturity, the original capital plus the corresponding interest.
The profitability is lower than that of this tool in pesos, but the objective is different: to maintain capital in dollars and add interest at maturity. Among the main banks, the rates show significant differences, so comparing conditions before immobilizing savings can significantly change the final outcome.
Banco Nación stands out among the most competitive entities for dollar deposits during August. Its rate for individuals reaches 1.60% TNA in electronic operations of between 30 and 59 days. If the investment is made through a branch, the rate for that same period is 0.75%.
- Banco Nación: up to 1.60% TNA
- Banco Macro: 1.50%
- Banco Provincia: 1.25%
- Banco Galicia: 1.25%
- Banco Hipotecario: 1.25%
- BBVA Argentina: 1%
- Banco Ciudad: 0.10%
- Banco Santander: 0.05%
- ICBC Argentina: 0.05%
- Banco Credicoop: 0.05%
The rate is not the only factor to consider before deciding on the investment. The period during which the dollars remain immobilized also matters. Generally, banks offer better returns the longer the term. At Banco Nación, for example, a person who establishes a fixed term through electronic channels can choose from different periods. For 30 to 59 days, they obtain a TNA of 1.60%; for 60 to 89 days, 1.85%; for 90 to 179 days, 2.50%; for 180 to 269 days, 3.25%; and for 270 to 370 days, 5%.
Therefore, it is not advisable to choose the highest rate without considering the immobilization time. A TNA of 5% may catch attention when compared to 1.60%, but it requires leaving the dollars immobilized for approximately a year. To have a specific reference, if a person deposits US$1,000 for 30 days at a TNA of 1.60%, the interest is US$1.32. With a TNA of 0.05%, those same US$1,000 would generate around US$0.04 in a 30-day period. The difference is also observed between operating at a branch and doing it electronically.
The requirements depend on each entity, although the first step is to have a dollar account from which to transfer or establish the deposit. Banco Nación sets a minimum amount of US$100 for its fixed terms in dollars. It is also necessary to have the money available in the corresponding account and comply with the bank's identification and security procedures. The operation is recorded and generates a certificate or receipt with the deposit details, capital, rate, and maturity date.
Before establishing it, it is advisable to check the rate that appears on the confirmation screen. Conditions may change, and the rate depends on the entity, the channel chosen, the amount, and the term. Before confirming, one must consider liquidity. Unlike a bank account, the dollars remain immobilized until the maturity date of the fixed term. Therefore, it is not advisable to invest money that may be needed beforehand.
The procedure is similar to that of a traditional fixed term in pesos, although one must first select the corresponding account and currency. The client must log into their bank's Home Banking or application, go to the investment section, and choose the option for fixed term in dollars. Then, they must select the account from which the operation will be made, indicate the amount, choose the available term, and review the offered rate. Once the conditions are accepted, the placement is confirmed and the bank provides the corresponding receipt.
