A massive fundamental week in the stock market
This week of September 14 is particularly busy on the fundamental front. Several major events will unfold over a few days: the resumption of work in the U.S. Congress on September 14, a highly anticipated vote in the U.S. Senate on the CLARITY Act on the 15th, a Federal Reserve meeting on the 15th and 16th, and then a monetary policy decision from the Bank of Japan on September 17 and 18. Stock markets, interest rates, the dollar, the yen, and also Bitcoin are expected to experience significant movements based on the outcomes of these various meetings.
The calendar kicks off this Monday, September 14, with the return of American lawmakers after the summer break. This resumption of legislative work is particularly watched in the cryptocurrency space, as the Senate is set to vote on the CLARITY Act, a major piece of legislation aimed at providing a clearer regulatory framework for crypto-assets in the United States.
The session on September 15 could thus serve as a major initial catalyst for Bitcoin and altcoins. The U.S. Senate must notably decide on the procedure to advance the text. The threshold of 60 votes will be crucial: with 53 Republican senators, the support of at least seven Democrats is necessary to reach this majority.
A favorable vote would represent an important step in building the American regulatory framework and could strengthen the prospects for cryptocurrency adoption by institutional players. Conversely, another failure could trigger a negative short-term reaction on Bitcoin, but this will depend on the number of Democrats missing to reach the 60-vote threshold.
The Fed as the dominant fundamental factor this week
But what matters even more this week is Kevin Warsh's Fed on Wednesday, September 16. The FOMC meets on September 15 and 16, and investors are particularly eager to know the future direction of U.S. monetary policy. Beyond the decision on rates, the market will seek to gauge the balance of power within the FOMC and identify the Fed's new projections regarding inflation and interest rates.
The central question will thus be the decision on September 16: Will the Fed change its federal funds rate or maintain the status quo? And especially if there is a rate hike, will it be isolated or the starting point of a stronger monetary tightening?
The answer will have significant consequences for all financial markets. Bond yields and the dollar will be directly affected, but stock markets and Bitcoin will also react strongly. A more restrictive Fed could push bond rates higher and weigh on risky assets. Conversely, a more accommodative tone could revive liquidity expectations and provide additional support to the markets.
The last major meeting of the week will be Japanese. The Bank of Japan will hold its monetary policy committee meeting on September 17 and 18. The BoJ is expected to raise its interest rate to 1.25% and will also communicate on the evolution of its balance sheet. At the same time, the recent appreciation of the yen is beginning to rekindle questions about carry trade and the risk of unwinding certain positions.
The concentration of these events is therefore exceptional. Within a few days, markets will have to absorb the return of the U.S. Congress, the vote on the CLARITY Act, the Fed's decision, and finally that of the BoJ.
For the price of Bitcoin, the key issue is to confirm the low point of July 1 at 57,750 USD while preserving the 200-day moving average (70,000 USD).
