Elvis Arrives on HBO Max: When the Movie About the King of Rock Premieres
Elvis, one of the most successful musical biopics in recent years, will be available on HBO Max starting August 1. The feature film directed by Baz Luhrmann will be accessible to all subscribers of the platform and will allow viewers to revisit the life of Elvis Presley, from his early steps in music to his rise as one of the most influential figures in rock history.
Originally released in theaters in 2022, the production was one of Warner Bros' major successes that year and received a strong response from both audiences and critics. Austin Butler's performance was particularly noteworthy, earning him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, as well as winning the Golden Globe and BAFTA for that role.
The film chronicles the rise of Elvis Presley, from his early years in Memphis to becoming a global music star. However, the story is not portrayed solely from the singer's perspective, but also from the viewpoint of Tom Parker, the manager who handled his career for over two decades.
Through this relationship, the production shows how Parker fostered Presley's artistic growth, but also how their professional relationship was marked by conflicts, economic interests, and decisions that significantly impacted the musician's life.
The story also dedicates significant space to the influence that African American music had on Elvis during his youth. The film reconstructs the social and cultural context of the southern United States in the 1950s, showing how the singer incorporated sounds from gospel, rhythm and blues, and country to build his own style.
Another key focus is the relationship between Elvis and his family, especially with his mother Gladys Presley, as well as his connection with Priscilla Presley, who would later become his wife.
The film covers some of the most important moments of his career, including his early recordings, massive tours, his time in Hollywood, his return to the stage with the famous 1968 television special, and his successful performances in Las Vegas. The soundtrack mixes original recordings of Elvis Presley with new versions and interpretations made specifically for the film.
The first official trailer of the movie was presented by Warner Bros. before its theatrical release and quickly surpassed millions of views on social media.
Elvis became one of Warner Bros.'s biggest commercial successes in 2022. The film grossed over $288 million at the global box office with an estimated budget of around $85 million, a figure that demonstrated its success both in the United States and in the international market.
During the awards season, it received eight Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Austin Butler, Cinematography, Costume Design, Production Design, Sound, Makeup and Hairstyling, and Editing. Although it did not win the top prize, it was one of the most recognized productions of the year by the Academy.
The premiere also sparked renewed interest in the musical legacy of Elvis Presley. Following the film's release in theaters, streams of his songs significantly increased on streaming platforms, and several of his albums re-entered international charts and lists.
