France Calls for Limiting Ukraine's Purchases of Non-European Weapons with EU Funds

By: delo.ua|2026/08/26 06:30:11

France is urging the European Commission to temporarily restrict exceptions for Ukraine regarding the purchase of weapons outside the EU using a €90 billion loan. Paris insists that these funds should primarily be directed to European manufacturers. According to the conditions of the program approved by the EU in April, Ukraine can purchase no more than 35% of the cost of a weapon unit from outside the EU if there are no analogs on the EU market or if manufacturers cannot meet the volumes. Ukraine has already received two exceptions for Chinese components for drones and American Patriot missiles. France emphasizes the temporary nature of these exceptions, aiming to redirect funding towards European production. However, not all EU countries support this position; defense ministers from several countries have previously advocated for maximum purchasing freedom for Ukraine. The European Commission must find a balance between increasing European production and ensuring Ukraine has the necessary resources for defense against Russia. No official comment has been received from the French government.
