Yangtze Memory's False Advertising Lawsuit Dismissed, Patent Litigation Continues
A U.S. federal court has dismissed the false advertising lawsuit filed by Yangtze Memory Technologies against Micron Technology and DCI Group. The court deemed statements linking competitors' semiconductor products to national security issues as political expression. The case was heard in the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia, with case number 1:2025cv01795. Yangtze Memory filed the lawsuit on June 7, 2025, and Micron's 10-Q filing on May 28, 2026, indicated that the lawsuit was related to claims of false advertising, product disparagement, and unfair competition. Yangtze Memory alleged that Micron and DCI Group spread negative claims by associating its products with 'spyware' and potential military connections. The court considered the statements as political expression rather than commercial advertising. While the false advertising issue has been resolved with this dismissal, the legal conflict between Micron and Yangtze Memory continues. Micron revealed that Yangtze Memory filed separate patent infringement lawsuits in the U.S., UK, and Germany on October 6, 2025. The disputes between the two parties illustrate the interplay of patents and security discourse in the semiconductor industry. Yangtze Memory's market share has increased to 13%, while Samsung Electronics holds 29% and SK Hynix has 18%. This ruling represents a case where competition among companies intersects with freedom of expression, and its future impact on the market requires further assessment.
