Illegal Mining in Russia: Why Home Farms Are Easily Detected
Illegal mining in regions where cryptocurrency mining is prohibited is becoming increasingly risky. Energy supply companies are noticing atypical increases in electricity consumption in residential homes and are initiating a clear chain of checks:
- Monitoring abnormal electricity consumption;
- Reporting data to tax authorities;
- Sending information to the prosecutor's office.
This was warned by investment advisor from the Bank of Russia's registry, Rufat Abyasov. According to him, home mining farms reveal themselves through characteristic loads: an apartment consumes electricity steadily and almost around the clock, making such deviations easily noticeable in statistics.
When Mining Remains Legal
Mining can be legally conducted in areas where there is no prohibition on cryptocurrency extraction and where electricity is consumed under a contract, with consideration and payment. Income from mining must be accounted for tax purposes: the mere fact of mining does not exempt one from the obligation to pay taxes.
For the legalization of activities, proper registration and interaction with government bodies are important: registration or notification is required in cases where current regulations demand it.
Consequences of Illegal Cryptocurrency Mining
Rufat Abyasov noted that regulations for miners are still changing.
While such norms have not fully come into effect, existing rules are applied to violators: for illegal connections, unaccounted consumption, damage to the energy company, and tax obligations.
If miners illegally connect to the power grid or consume electricity without accounting, the violation is first recorded, then damage is calculated, and a demand for compensation is made. Equipment may be seized as a means of committing an offense; the question of further storage or return is resolved within the framework of the procedure.
Moreover, income from cryptocurrency mining is taxed regardless of whether the activity itself was legal. This applies even in cases where miners extract Bitcoin or other cryptocurrencies bypassing established restrictions.
What Schemes Are Considered Illegal
- Mining in regions where a ban is in place: the violation is related to the very location of extraction.
- Mining with illegal connections to the power grid or without accounting for consumption: damage arises from unpaid electricity.
- Mining without paying taxes on income: claims arise from tax authorities.
What Damage Does Illegal Mining Cause
The main damage consists of losses for energy companies, overloads of power grids, and uncollected taxes. For energy companies, this is unpaid or unaccounted consumption; for infrastructure, it is a stable load where the network is designed for normal household peaks; and for the budget, it is income from mining on which taxes have not been paid.
Consequences depend on what violation is confirmed: fines, damage recovery, seizure or confiscation of equipment. If actions fall under criminal norms, punishment can be stricter, up to imprisonment.
Where Mining Is Already Prohibited
Since August 15, a ban on cryptocurrency mining has been in effect in Moscow, the Moscow region, and in several municipal districts of the Kursk region. Restrictions are being introduced to reduce the risk of electricity shortages.
Year-round bans until March 15, 2031, are in effect in the following zones:
- Dagestan, North Ossetia, Ingushetia, Chechnya, Kabardino-Balkaria, and Karachay-Cherkessia — complete ban until March 15, 2031.
- LPR, DPR, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions — complete ban until March 15, 2031.
- Southern Irkutsk region, most areas of Transbaikal and Buryatia — year-round ban until March 15, 2031.

Why Home Mining Is Easily Detected
The main sign of a mining farm in an apartment is atypical electricity consumption patterns. Unlike regular household use, such loads usually exhibit several characteristics:
- Equipment operates almost continuously;
- Load on the power grid remains stable;
- Consumption noticeably differs from normal household patterns.
This is why attempts to conceal illegal mining in residential areas can quickly lead to inspections, claims from energy companies, and tax consequences.
