Naomi Bashkansky predicts brain-controlled AI coding agents by 2027

Naomi Bashkansky, a former OpenAI alignment researcher, resigned on July 23 and joined Conduit as a founding researcher. At Conduit, she will develop models to convert non-invasive neural recordings into text for AI agents, a concept she refers to as 'telepathy.' Bashkansky, who spent 1.5 years at OpenAI, outlined her vision in an Aug. 4 essay, predicting that a headband could translate intentions into prompts for an AI coding agent by 2027. She anticipates AI systems directly consuming neural representations by 2030 and two-way 'read and write' technology by 2035, labeling these as optimistic predictions without any launch commitments. Current thought-to-text research focuses on decoding constrained speech-related brain activity, while free-form communication remains unproven. Conduit reported in December 2025 that it collected approximately 10,000 hours of neuro-language data from thousands of participants using multimodal headsets. Although the company shared some zero-shot examples, it did not provide aggregate performance metrics or third-party validation. Bashkansky noted that Conduit's results improve with more training hours, presenting it as a broader alternative to her previous work at OpenAI. Meta's June report indicated that its Brain2Qwerty achieved 61% average word accuracy, improving with increased data. A Nature Communications study with 723 participants found that performance improved with more EEG and MEG data but highlighted the ongoing challenge of practical non-invasive brain-to-text technology. Conduit's next step is to demonstrate public aggregate performance by linking its dataset to a portable system capable of decoding free-form thought.
