Sam Altman Warns Against AI Control by a Few Companies, Calls for Public Oversight of the Future

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman expressed his concerns on the David Senra podcast about the potential for AI to be controlled by a small number of companies or individuals in the future, which could lead to the majority of consumers losing their voice in technological advancements. He emphasized the need for the public to have a say in shaping the future, advocating for a joint evolution of society and models. Altman also pointed out that excessive fear of AI going out of control might lead people to sacrifice their freedoms for safety, indirectly referencing Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's warnings about AI risks and calls for increased government regulation. Although OpenAI has not yet open-sourced its cutting-edge models, it released two open-weight models last year, gpt-oss-120b and gpt-oss-20b. Altman believes that American AI leaders have failed to adequately demonstrate how technology can enhance personal autonomy and anticipates the largest wave of entrepreneurship, as AI empowers more individuals to start small businesses.
