SK Hynix Confirms No Plans for Factory Construction in Japan
SK Hynix has kept the possibility of building a memory semiconductor production facility in Japan open, but stated that there are no confirmed plans regarding the investment in Miyagi Prefecture. In a disclosure to the Korea Exchange on the 21st, SK Hynix said, "We are considering various measures, including the establishment of additional production bases, to strengthen our competitiveness in the memory business, but there are currently no confirmed plans." This statement follows reports about the construction of a factory in Miyagi Prefecture in northeastern Honshu, clarifying that the company is still in the review stage and has not made any investment confirmations. Japan is regarded as a country with a semiconductor materials and equipment supply chain and manufacturing infrastructure, and the Japanese government has plans to develop Tohoku, Kyushu, and Hokkaido as semiconductor hubs. SK Hynix is also investing in domestic production facilities, committing 54 trillion won to the construction of wafer plants in Yongin and Cheongju. Discussions about building fabs in the United States are also underway. SK Hynix has not confirmed the construction of a factory in Miyagi Prefecture, and will make further disclosures when specific details are finalized.
