U.S. Chicago National Activity Index for July at -0.08, Below Long-Term Average
The economic activity in the U.S. for July has shown a slight decline below the long-term average. The Chicago Fed National Activity Index (CFNAI) for July was recorded at -0.08, down from +0.06 in June. The CFNAI is a monthly indicator that gauges overall economic activity and price pressures in the U.S., combining economic indicators from four categories: production and income, employment and hours worked, personal consumption and housing, and sales and inventories. An index of 0 indicates that the economy is expanding in line with historical trend growth rates, while a negative value indicates below-average growth and a positive value indicates above-average growth. Although the July index fell below the baseline of 0, the magnitude of the decline is limited, making it difficult to interpret as a signal of recession. The Chicago Fed explains that the likelihood of a recession increases when the three-month moving average, CFNAI-MA3, falls below -0.70, and the July single-month index of -0.08 does not meet this criterion. This indicator may be referenced in the Federal Reserve's policy decisions, but it is challenging to base policy decisions solely on a single monthly indicator. The impact on market prices should be considered alongside additional indicators such as inflation, employment, and Fed statements. The next CFNAI release is scheduled for September 21.
