Seoul Bond Market Shows Cautious Trend Ahead of 3 Trillion Won 5-Year Treasury Bond Auction
The Seoul bond market is exhibiting a cautious atmosphere ahead of the Financial Monetary Committee meeting and the 3 trillion won 5-year treasury bond auction scheduled for the 27th. There are analyses suggesting that the gap between short-term and long-term bonds may widen due to fluctuations in international oil prices and adjustments in expectations for next year's treasury bond issuance. The government's plan for treasury bond issuance in August includes an auction size of 3 trillion won for the 5-year bonds. The treasury bond auction serves as a procedure to confirm actual demand; if demand is weak, interest rates may rise and bond prices could fall. Conversely, if demand is sufficient, the supply burden decreases. The upcoming budget proposal for next year and the establishment of a future response fund may also act as variables. The government plans to utilize additional national tax revenue generated from the semiconductor boom as funding for the fund. This could lower expectations for a reduction in next year's treasury bond issuance. The trend of short-term interest rates ahead of the Financial Monetary Committee is also significant, with the market reflecting the possibility of consecutive interest rate hikes in July and August. The long-term segment is influenced by fiscal concerns in the U.S. and Japan, and the pace of interest rate increases for ultra-long-term bonds has also accelerated. International oil prices are impacting the bond market, with the U.S. announcement of sanctions against Iran scheduled for the 24th. This week, the bond market will sequentially confirm the 5-year bond auction, the Financial Monetary Committee meeting, and the Bank of Korea's report release.
