Agave is Solana's primary validator client, developed by Anza. Version v4.2 bundles several protocol changes whose mainnet feature activations are targeted for 17 August 2026, according to the release schedule Anza published on 30 June 2026. Those dates are targets rather than guarantees, and an activation window can move. The more useful point is a narrower one: what actually switches on that day is considerably smaller than most summaries of this upgrade imply, and the gap between the two is where nearly every misreading of Agave v4.2 begins.
Slot time: 400ms to 350ms — and no further that day. This is the detail most coverage compresses into something inaccurate. SIMD-0525 is a five-step slot-time reduction: 400ms, then 350ms, then 300ms, then 250ms, and finally 200ms. Each step has its own feature gate and is activated separately, on its own schedule. The 17 August target is step one: 400ms to 350ms. The 200ms figure is the end state of the whole programme, not the value that arrives on activation day. Any sentence implying that Solana's slots halve on 17 August is wrong — the path down to 200ms is a sequence of distinct switches, and only the first of them is scheduled here.
Transaction size. The current limit is 1,232 bytes. v4.2 raises it — reported as 4,096 bytes per the published schedule. This is the ceiling on how much a single transaction can carry, so it constrains how many instructions or how much data can be packed into one submission rather than split across several.
Storage cost (rent). Account costs, measured in lamports per byte, come down. The decrease is gradual, and the widely-cited ~90% figure is the reported eventual scale of the reduction rather than a discount that lands in full on day one. Read it as the destination of a phased change, not as a same-day repricing.
v4.2 ships Alpenglow's complete code ahead of its activation, which is set for v4.3. The August release is therefore a staging ground for what coverage describes as the largest protocol change Solana has attempted since launch. Alpenglow will target confirmation in roughly 150ms, the removal of on-chain vote transactions, and tolerance for up to 40% of stake being offline. All three are future work. None of them will be live on 17 August. Code shipped is not a feature activated, and the two upgrades are worth holding cleanly apart: v4.2 is a set of incremental activations plus a staging step, while Alpenglow is the structural change that follows it.
This distinction is what makes the rest of the upgrade legible, and it outlasts any single release. A slot is the processing window assigned to the leader — the time it has to produce a block. Confirmation, and then finality, are separate properties: the point at which the network treats a transaction as settled and no longer reversible. Shortening the slot tightens the block-production cadence; it does not by itself shorten finality. That is precisely why Alpenglow is a separate body of work from SIMD-0525 — its ~150ms figure is a confirmation target, not a slot target. Reading "faster slots" as "faster settlement" is the second most common way this upgrade gets misdescribed, after the assumption that the whole slot-time reduction lands at once.
ETHNews framed v4.2 as "cheaper to use, harder to run": as slots shorten, validator hardware requirements rise. The user-facing gains — lower storage costs, larger transactions, a shorter slot — carry a cost on the operator side, and that cost falls on the people running nodes rather than on the people sending transactions.
