Trump Announces New Negotiations with Iran, Rejects Military Strike
U.S. President Donald Trump announced the start of a new round of negotiations with Iran on August 3. He stated that the U.S. was prepared to launch a large-scale strike against Iran but decided against it after appeals from allies who believe an agreement can be reached. Trump noted that the negotiations will address maritime security in the Strait of Hormuz and Iran's nuclear program. Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman called for de-escalation of the conflict during a phone call with Trump. Iranian media denied reports that Tehran requested Washington to refrain from strikes. Earlier, Trump stated that he was willing to postpone military actions against Iran if an agreement on the nuclear program and maritime security was reached. On July 6, Iran attacked commercial vessels in the Strait of Hormuz, leading to U.S. retaliatory actions. From July 8 to 13, U.S. Central Command conducted precision strikes on Iranian targets, citing the protection of maritime freedom. On July 14, Trump threatened to expand strikes against Iran if Tehran did not return to negotiations.
