Trump Pressures Fed for Rate Cut Despite CPI Surge
Donald Trump, the President of the United States, has pressured the Federal Reserve to lower interest rates, arguing that the U.S. benchmark rate should be the lowest in the world. This comes as the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for August rose by 3.4% year-on-year, increasing the likelihood of a rate hike to 86%. President Trump publicly expressed his opposition to the monetary policy. Speaking to reporters in Ireland, he stated, "The U.S. should have the lowest rates in the world because it is very strong." When asked about the possibility of a rate hike at the upcoming Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting on the 15th and 16th, he replied, "I don’t know." The August CPI increased by 0.4% compared to the previous month, and the market sees a high likelihood that the Fed will raise rates for the first time in nearly three years. Trump criticized the Fed for its slow pace of rate cuts and mentioned the possibility of halting trade with countries that have trade deficits. He said, "We can stop that in two minutes." The outcome of this FOMC meeting is drawing attention from financial markets amid rising prices and energy costs.
