Ukraine Deploys UAV Interceptors to Protect Civilian Vessels

The Ukrainian Navy has deployed additional units of UAV interceptors to protect civilian shipping and the coastline. The tightening of security measures aims to maintain the operation of the maritime export corridor amid Russian attacks on commercial vessels. Vice Admiral Oleksiy Neizhpapa, Commander of the Ukrainian Navy, noted that protecting civilian shipping remains one of the Navy's main tasks, and the work of the units will be intensified. In the first half of 2026, Navy ships and boats covered approximately 350,000 nautical miles and made over 7,000 sea sorties. Ensuring the operation of the maritime corridor through which Ukraine exports agricultural products also remains a priority. Russian attacks on commercial vessels have increased risks for transportation. The Navy is updating crew training by acquiring new simulators and training devices. Ship repairs and equipment modernization are ongoing. Some Navy units underwent certification in 2026 as part of integration with NATO. Due to attacks on commercial vessels, the Southern Mining and Processing Plant halted operations, leading to a backlog of export products in warehouses.
