U.S. Commerce Secretary Opposes Apple's Use of Chinese Memory
The Trump administration has requested Apple to refrain from purchasing Chinese memory semiconductors. U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Rutnik stated his opposition to the possibility of Apple using Chinese memory. He said, "There should be other solutions to the memory issue, and it is undesirable for great American companies to use Chinese memory." Apple is considering products from Changxin Memory and Yangtze Memory to alleviate memory supply disruptions. However, under U.S. government regulations, Apple needs prior approval to provide product information to these companies. The purchase of generic components or price negotiations is not separately prohibited. The backdrop for Apple's memory review is the increase in demand for AI data centers, leading to memory price and supply issues. Apple’s Chief Operating Officer, Sabih Khan, did not confirm whether they would test Chinese memory, stating that all options must be considered given the supply shortage. Pressure from U.S. politicians continues, with two lawmakers urging Secretary Rutnik not to allow American companies to purchase Chinese memory. Apple's choices are positioned between supply stability and regulatory risks.
