U.S. Diplomatic Missions in the Middle East May Begin Allowing Diplomats to Return This Week
The U.S. State Department is preparing to allow diplomats to return to embassies in the Middle East that were evacuated before and during the outbreak of war in Iran, indicating that the Trump administration expects that full-scale hostilities will not erupt again. U.S. diplomatic missions in the Middle East may begin allowing diplomats to return as early as this week and gradually reduce the emergency measures previously taken. The embassies planned to restore higher staffing levels include those in Israel, Lebanon, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Oman, Iraq, and Kuwait. The redeployment of diplomatic personnel signifies that tensions are easing, even though negotiations between the U.S. and Iran over extending the 60-day ceasefire agreement that expired last week have stalled. Dan Shapiro, who served as the U.S. ambassador to Israel during the Obama administration, stated that restoring some of the evacuated diplomatic personnel indicates that the government believes the war is nearing its end.
