U.S. Power Grid Needs 510,000 Additional Workers by 2030
The U.S. power and grid value chain is projected to require approximately 510,000 additional workers by 2030. According to Goldman Sachs' 2026 report, the U.S. must fill about 510,000 new jobs to meet the additional power demand. The manufacturing, construction, and operations sectors are expected to need around 300,000 workers, while the transmission, distribution, and system interconnection sectors will require 207,000 workers. U.S. power demand is expected to increase by an average of 2.5% annually from 2023 to 2030, with data centers accounting for 1 percentage point of this increase. The estimated investment in power generation is $444 billion, while the investment in transmission is estimated at $302 billion. Goldman Sachs analyzed that the number of energy-related apprentices in the U.S. will be 45,000 in 2024, and to meet the demand in the transmission and distribution sectors, this number needs to increase to 65,000 annually. Renewable energy is identified as a factor driving labor demand, and the long training and skill acquisition periods for transmission work may exacerbate labor shortages. Power demand from data centers is expected to rise from 31 GW in 2025 to 66 GW in 2027. The U.S. Department of Energy has warned that if the expansion of new stable power sources is delayed, the risk of blackouts in 2030 could increase by 100 times compared to the present. The expansion of power demand requires simultaneous responses in generation capacity, transmission networks, permitting, and workforce.
