As of August 22, the token share of the open weight model at the Vercel AI Gateway has increased to 62%. This is more than double the figure of 28.4% recorded on June 24, just two months prior. Guillermo Rauch, CEO of Vercel, stated that the share of the open weight model is 62%, while the share of the closed model is 38%. In the July AI Gateway Production Index, the share of the open weight model also rose to 29%, nearly tripling from 11% in April. The expenditure share for the open weight model was less than 4% as of June, indicating that while token throughput has increased, spending remains concentrated on the closed model. Vercel explained that this data is based on anonymized data aggregated from actual production applications. Anthropic accounted for 61% of the gateway spending in June, but its token share was only 32%. DeepSik took the third spot with 22.6% of the gateway tokens in June, following Anthropic and Google. Google's token share was recorded at 24%. The open weight model is an AI model that allows external users to download and adjust the trained weights, enabling companies to manage costs and data control differently than with closed models.
