Google Expands Undersea Cable Network in the Dominican Republic

Google is expanding its undersea cable network connecting Latin America, the Caribbean, the United States, and Europe, centered around the Dominican Republic. This project involves the construction of three new undersea cables and new branches of existing cables to enhance regional redundancy and resilience. Google Cloud has unveiled the 'Americas Connect' initiative. The new undersea cables consist of Alicios, Canoas, and Olalus. Alicios will connect the Dominican Republic with Panama and Chile, while Canoas will link the Dominican Republic with Bermuda. Olalus will provide a direct connection between the Dominican Republic and Florida in the United States. Once these routes are established, a connection loop in the Caribbean will be formed, diversifying data paths. Google stated that this network will connect to Google Cloud regions in Chile, Los Angeles, Las Vegas, South Carolina, Virginia, and Madrid, Spain. Internet traffic in the Dominican Republic has increased by 500% over the past five years, with traffic to the United States accounting for over 35%, yet currently, there is only one cable directly connecting to the U.S. In 2023, Google unveiled Nubem, connecting Portugal, Bermuda, and the United States, and plans to announce Sol in 2025, linking the U.S., Bermuda, the Azores, and Spain.
