Tesla Confirms Suspension of New Orders for Solar Roof

Tesla has confirmed that it has effectively suspended new orders for its solar roof tile product, Solar Roof. Although there has been no official announcement of termination, sales channels and product information are being redirected to standard solar panels. Tesla stated that it will no longer accept Solar Roof orders from third-party certified installers and will only supply standard solar panels moving forward. The existing Solar Roof-specific webpage has automatically redirected to the standard solar panel page as of the 21st, based on Korean time. Currently, the Tesla support center still has documents related to Solar Roof, and support for existing customers is being maintained. Solar Roof is a solar tile product that resembles roofing material, which was unveiled in 2016 and began mass production in 2020. However, it has faced challenges in widespread adoption due to installation difficulties and cost burdens. According to data from March 30, 2023, approximately 3,000 Solar Roofs have been installed in the United States, with a total installed capacity of only about 30 MWdc. The average weekly installations in 2022 were limited to 21, and the market share of Solar Roof is estimated to be less than 0.03%. This change is interpreted as a signal that Tesla's residential energy business is moving closer to standard solar panels and storage devices. How support for installation, warranty, and problem resolution for existing customers will be maintained will need to be confirmed through further announcements.
